When deciding on which digital picture frame to buy there are many different features of these products that you have to consider. The major product features and options you need to check are explained here to help you.
Digital Photo Frame Product Features
When you read the list below decide which are the most important features to you. You could even print out this page and use it as a check list when you are looking at potential digital picture frames.
Display Screen Ratio
This is the ratio of the width to the height of the display screen within the digital frame. There are mainly just 2 ratios which are 4:3 and 16:9. The best way to understand these is to compare them to television screen ratios. 16:9 is considered as wide screen and 4:3 is the same as the older almost square screens.
Display Screen Resolution in Pixels
When looking at a digital image or photo the screen resolution is what determines the quality of the picture you see. This is measured by the number of pixels (points of light) that exist to illuminate the display area of the screen. The number of pixels in the digital photo display are indicated by a multiplication of the width in pixels by the height in pixels. The large the numbers the better the quality will be.
Typical resolutions are 640×480, 800×600, 1024×768 and you will find many more in between. However it is a higher pixel density will give you a better quality image. So you need to consider both resolution and image size.
Digital Screen Size
The size of the digital screen is measured in inches diagonally. The screens on digital picture frames vary from about 4″ up to 10″ and now even 15″, with the most popular being in the 6″ to 8″ range”.
Remember though that if two digital picture frames have the same screen size, but different pixel resolutions, then the screen with the higher resolution will be the one with the better quality image. For example a high resolution of 1024×768 would be better than 800×600.
Internal Memory
This is the memory that is built-in to the digital photo frame and is measured in megabytes such as 256MB or 512MB.
Memory Cards
The memory card slot on the digital photo frame is important as it determines the type of memory card you can use to load your digital photos or images into the digital frame. You need to make sure that it is the same type as the memory card you use in your digital camera or personal computer. If you get a digital picture frame with a memory slot that is not compatible you will not be able to load up your photos.
Examples are CF, MMC, MS, SD and Memory Stick
Image Format
This is the type of file that holds your digital images and in most case will be JPEG files.
Video Format
Some Digital Picture Frames will also be able to play video and you need to check that the video format of the videos from your digital camera or other source are compatible. Normally this will be MPEG.
Audio Format
A digital photo display may also have the ability to play audio such as music or speech. Typically these would be MP3 format files so make sure you check for compatibility.
Remote Control
For ease of use and total convenience many digital frames are now supplied with a remote control, so if this is important to you then make sure it is in your selection criteria. You may have to pay a little more but this is probably a feature most people would want.
USB Port
A USD port will be essential if you want to use a USB Flash drive or Pen drive to load your photos into your digital frame.
USB PC Connection
Similarly a USB PC connection will be essential if you want to transfer your images directly from your own computer to your photo frame.
Bluetooth or Wireless Facility
You can now even use Bluetooth or your home wi-fi system to transfer your images, so look out for this if you need it.
Slide Show
This is normally a total necessity for everyone and will probably be found on almost every digital picture frame out there.

With the vast number of different types, colors, sizes and options currently available on digital picture frames it can be difficult to know where to start in your online search for your digital frame of choice.
A great way to start off is to look at what is currently selling well as this will give you a head start. Many other purchasers will have already searched the market and by consensus will have picked up on what is a good product and a good deal. Value for money is always at the top of everyone’s list of priorities when buying and you can therefore benefit from all the research that they have already done.
Always check Amazon and Ebay
Good places to look for the current best sellers are on Ebay.com and Amazon.com. They both offer an extremely broad range of digital photo frames from many different suppliers and always have a very large inventory in stock. When a photo frame becomes a top seller on these sites you will know it is one of the best products as they both have a massive market and a very large number of buyers.
On both Amazon and Ebay you will find that every category you search on, including of course digital photo frames, will be returned with the best sellers listed first and in order. This means that the first product you see will be the top seller for that category. Another benefit of the large Ebay and Amazon marketplaces is that they often have great discounts so it can be relatively easy to find the best digital photo frame deals.
To find good deals on digital picture frames at smaller online suppliers is going to be more difficult as you are going to have to search for their sites on the Internet using Google or some other web search engine. You will have to then visit each of the web site in the search results and then probably visit several pages to find what you want. There may or may not be a great deal to be found but you could strike it lucky!
Good luck finding the best digital photo frame deal!
Digital Photo Frame Display Size and Quality are Important
Filed Under Display Screen | Leave a Comment
Not every digital photo frame is made equal! There are a very large number of digital picture frames now on the market, which makes it very difficult to know what is actually available and even more difficult when it comes to choosing one.
Fortunately digital photo frames continue to drop in price because of increased popularity and reduced manufacturing costs. But that does not making finding what you want any easier.
One important factor to realize is that all digital picture frames are different and often in several ways.
All the different digital frames do not provide the same functionality or the same quality and as with any electronic product, especially something which uses a new technology, it always makes sense to try and understand a little about what is actually available before starting your search.
As with all things, you get what you pay for. If you want the best deal at the cheapest price then you are probably going to have to compromise on quality, size and features.
Similarly if you really want the best digital photo frame with all the modern features then you are going to have to find the extra cash to pay for it.
Is Biggest Really Best?
Only if that’s what you want and of course you have to be able to afford it.
The size of the digital picture frame that you want is a personal thing. You may want it to fit in proportionally with existing décor in your home or maybe you really need a bigger display screen because your eye sight is not so good.
Screen sizes vary a lot from the 1” screens on keychain digital frames up to big 15” frames and some are now even about 19 or 20”.
You will find there is a lot more choice with the smaller sizes and when you get to the larger sizes the number available will reduce quite a lot, but you will still have a big enough choice to find something to meet your requirements.
Currently the best selling sizes of digital photo frame are 6.5”, 7”, 8”, 9”, 10” and 10.4”. The smaller mini frames (1.1”to 1.5”) that you will find on a digital keyring photo album are also proving very popular. Even some of the larger 11” and 15”versions are now starting to sell well.
The Quality of the Screen Display is Important
The quality of what you see on the screen of the digital photo display is determined by several factors.
The most important one to consider is the screen resolution which depends on the actual number of pixels displayed in the display area.
A digital frame with more pixels will give a clearer and better image display. Displays with a large pixel count are usually referred to as high resolution photo frames. However it is the density of the pixels in the screen which really determines the best picture.
As an example two of the top selling digital photo frames have sizes of 6.5” and 10” and their pixel counts are 720×480 and 800×480 respectively. The smaller one therefore has about the same number of pixels as the larger, but the pixels on the smaller one cover a much smaller area. Thus the smaller could be considered a high resolution digital picture display whereas the larger would not. The smaller one would give a better picture.
Other typical resolutions you will find on digital picture frames are 640 x 480, 800 x 600, 1024 x 768 and 1280 x 1024.
If you get a chance to see one also check the maximum brightness of the screen and the contrast to make sure it can deal correctly with the darker colors.
